Extreme temperatures promote oxidation, which results in pitting, rusting, and even a loss of structural support on metal surfaces. Choosing the suitable high temperature coating requires help from the coating manufacturer depending on the application. High temperature paint and coatings includes properties that can save exhausts, industrial machinery, engine manifolds, outdoor grills, bbq pits, bbq smokers, exhaust silencers, stacks, process piping, wood and coal burning stoves.

High heat paint, heat resistant spray paint or high heat spray paint can all be classified the same based on the specific applicatoion. These coatings offer protection for commercial and industrial surfaces that are exposed to constant heat.

A leading manufacturer Dampney Co. Inc. offers a broad range of these high temperature coatings based on the application, temperature resistance, color and surface.

Silicone-: This kind of paint is formulated to offer resistance to a high temp when applied at new construction or a maintenance coating. Also, it’s able to be used to hot substrates without influencing the coating film. Usually, the more silicone is, the higher the heat resistance is.

High heat paint is necessary to protect the substrate from high temperatures without failing functionality.  The benefits of this paint

  • The effective temp can range up to 1200-1500F.
  • It helps withthermal fatigue, improves performance of metal that requires elevated temperatures.
  • Higher operating temperatures and limits thermal exposure
  • It prevents corrosion under insulation. That means it offers an additional covering of protection between insulation and the hot surface.
  • These paints are used across a huge range of industries as well as by barbecue enthusiasts and homeowners.
  • Below are some typical uses for high temperature paint!
  • Auto engines and transmissions , steam pipes, diesel exhaust systems, motors, radiators, furnaces, wood stoves, broilers, barbeque grills, ovens, OEM manufactured components

    Repainting a wood burning stove-

  • Before starting your paint job, contact the paint and coating manufacturer and ensure that the paint is suitable.

    Prepare the surface:

Firstly, you should check and remove any rust, blistering or peeling on the surface of the wood stove. Sanding, sandblasting or grinding is a good way to help you at this time.

After that, don’t forget to examine oil, dirt, grease or other contaminants because these prevent the paint from sticking to the stove. Then use a solvent to remove them.

    Apply the paint:

The first thing is to shake the can about 1-2 minutes. This guarantees that the solvents and pigments of the paint are mixed well. To get the best results when spraying, make sure the temperature of the surface of the wood stove and the air are from 65 to 85 degrees.

    Cure the paint:

Depending on the paint, it might require you to cure by heating the stove. You need to prepare a small kindling fire and then bring the wood stove temperature to 350F. Leave it about 45 minutes.

Steps to paint a grill: Not intended to be used on a ceramic or porcelain painted surface unless sandblasting down to bare metal can be done.

The finish of the grill easily deteriorates because of some reasons like weathering, the sun exposure, the wear and tear of use, etc. If your grill paint is failing, you need to paint a new and fresh coat to bring its appearance back.

  • Choose an open and suitable location with enough airflow. It’s best to be outdoors to prevent paint fumes from spreading in your home.

    Clean the grill:

Remove all stuck food particles, grimes and greases on the grill. Wear rubber gloves and abrade the outside with a wire brush.

    Start painting:

Before doing, you need to tape off parts of the grill that you don’t want to paint like knobs, handles, etc. Then apply the first coat! Hold a can of heat resistant spray primer about 12 inches away from the surface of the grill and spray.

Avoid spraying a particular spot too much to prevent dripping. So, it’s best to move the can slowly and steadily to give an even and complete coverage. After that, leave it to dry about 20 minutes. Next, use the heat resistant spray paint and start applying the second coat.

Do the same thing and let it dry from 40 minutes to 1 hour. Allow the grill to dry overnight before using. Slowly fire up the bbq grill or bbq smoker using a thermometer at 350F for 30-45 minutes.

How to paint your steam pipe

When you’re going to paint your steam pipe, make sure you perform it in the summer. If you do it in the winter, the moisture from condensation will cause the paint to cure improperly.

Turn off everything: Firstly, you need to turn off the furnace and all the water to the broiler. Then drain all the lines carefully.

Remove the old paint: Start scraping the pipe’s lengths that you want to paint and roughing up the surface. Make sure there is no old flaking paint so that the paint can adhere to it with ease.

Paint the steam pipe:  Spray at least two coats to attain complete coverage. Make sure to leave each to dry completely. It’s best to start in the morning because this gives a more extended drying period.

  • NOTE- Confirm with the Paint manfacture if the paint has to be heat cured prior to turning on the steam pipe as this may need to be applied and cured in a shop that has baking capabilities.

How to paint an exhaust pipe

Your exhaust pipe is exposed to extreme conditions.

Prepare: While painting, find in a well-ventilated area and use a drop cloth to prevent over-spraying. Sandblasting and mechanical grinding is idea.. Allow it to stand for 1 minute and wipe with a lint-free cloth. Tape off the surrounding parts of the car that you don’t want to paint.

Paint the exhaust pipe: Shake a can of high heat primer for 1 minute and then apply the first coat. Hold it about 8-12 inches away from the surface and spray in a steady motion. Apply 2-3 light coats and leave some minutes in between each. Then allow the primer to dry for at least 1 hour. After that, use the same technique and continue applying another 2-3 light coats of the high heat spray paint to your exhaust pipe. And let it dry about 1-2 hours.

Cure: Depending on the paint, you need to follow its instruction to finish the curing process.

How to paint engine parts with high temperature paint

Painting an engine and its parts is for both aesthetic and practical purposes. For instance, applying the paint on an engine block helps to stop the formation of rust.

Clean the engine: Mecanical Grinding and sandblasting is ideal.

    Paint the engine:
If you need a primer for a better and longer lasting result, it’s not necessary for the engine. Since the engines are made of cast aluminum or cast iron, the paint can adhere to these materials with ease. And this lessens the overall thickness of the paint.

The paint needs to be applied when the outdoor temperature is from 50 to 60F, and a humidity rating is below 85%. Relying on that, the paint will dry and cure accurately. After that, start spraying the paint as we mentioned above. Apply two coats and allow each to dry completely.

    Painting a Radiator

Surface and Preparation: Check with the paint manufacturer to see if the high temperature coating needs to be heat cured  vs. air dried in a well ventilated area.

The first thing is to switch off and let the radiator cool before starting. Then put a dust sheet on the floor and spread newspapers between it and the wall. Also, don’t forget to choose a well-ventilated area and wear protective gears to work effectively.

    Sand the radiator:

Examine any pitting from heavy rust with sandpaper (from 40 to 60 grits). Then sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper (from 80 to 120 grits) to remove rust and get a smooth surface.

  • Try to apply the same technique as the primer by spraying another coat of the heat resistance spray paint over the surface. Of course, you need to use the back-and-forth motion to get the smooth coating. Let the first one dry for 5-7 minutes (or according to the instructions of the paint) and then apply one or more to get the desired finish. Finally, allow it to dry completely.
